My Little Potato Surprise
I’ve often joked that even a plastic plant would melt under my care. But this little potato had other plans. 🌿
I had three large potatoes that had sprouted in my kitchen. Usually, my "brown fingers" would see a mess to be tossed out. Instead, I decided to pop them in a planter just to see if they’d grow. No expectations, no pressure—just a quiet experiment.
Then, it happened. I saw a tiny bit of green peeping through the soil. I felt this surge of simple, pure happiness—like a child discovering a hidden treasure. I was so amazed! It was a profound reminder that we shouldn't judge ourselves or label our potential before we’ve even started.
The 3 Shifts in My Internal Garden:
- From Labeling to Curiosity: I shifted from "I am a plant killer" to "I wonder what will happen?" This is the essence of Beginner’s Mind. When we drop the labels, we stop blocking the sunlight from our own growth.
- From Judging to Trying: Instead of judging the sprouted potatoes as "gone bad," I saw them as "ready to start." There is always hope in the effort to try, even when we think we lack the "talent."
- From Striving to Surprising: I didn't "work hard" to make this happen; I just created the space. When we stop over-managing every outcome, we leave room for the pure surprise of life to greet us.
There is so much magic waiting to sprout when we stop telling ourselves we can’t. By letting go of my "brown finger" story, I made room for this little green miracle.
What old label are you ready to stop wearing so you can experience the surprise of your own growth?
