Standing along the quiet boardwalk of Lake Clifton in Mandurah, Perth, I found myself surrounded by two very different kinds of teachers. Down in the calm waters rested the thrombolites—living, rock-like structures built by tiny microbes over thousands of years. They carry a history that goes back millions of years, standing as a beautiful symbol of Patience. They don’t rush; they simply exist in harmony with the natural, gentle rhythm of the lake.
But as my family and I stood there soaking in the quiet, a tiny native bird decided to interrupt our deep philosophical thoughts. It swooped down and landed right on the wooden jetty, staring straight at us.
If the thrombolites represent patience, this little bird was the definition of pure, joyful Curiosity!
It made direct eye contact, gave us a lively chirp-chirp, and flew away—only to circle right back again for another look, as if to say, "Who are you, and what are you doing in my meadow?" It was such a cute, funny moment that broke the stillness with pure delight.
In life, we need both of these energies. We need the patience of the ancient thrombolites to ground us when life’s timeline feels slow. But we also need the playful curiosity of that little bird—the willingness to look at the world with fresh eyes, to make joyful connections, and to live fully in the moment without taking ourselves too seriously.
As a mindfulness experience designer, this beautiful contrast between the steady and the playful invites us to practice these three simple shifts:
From trying to force things to letting them happen naturally: Instead of rushing or stressing to get things done right away, we learn to be patient and trust our own timing—just like the slow, steady growth of the thrombolites.
From just looking at life to being part of it: Instead of just watching life pass us by from a distance, we allow ourselves to step in, connect, and enjoy the unexpected, happy moments right in front of us.
From a heavy, serious mind to a light, happy heart: Remembering that being calm and mindful doesn't mean we have to be completely serious or rigid. True peace leaves plenty of room for quiet stillness and a playful smile.
When we combine patience with curiosity, we learn to rest deeply while still enjoying the playful dance of life.
Journey inward, grow forward.
🌷 May your week find its own natural, patient rhythm.
