Little Moments, Big Connections
Stepping into the room at @Bedok Public Library, a deep sense of gratitude washed over me. Together with my wonderful co-facilitator, MeeThoo, and with the warm support of NLB Bedok, we looked out at a simple, still space: a quiet semi-circle of black chairs and colorful play mats resting on the carpet. On the screen, the words read softly: “Little Moments, Big Connection: Mindfulness for Parents & Kids.” We often think of a library session as a place for listening to a talk. But mindfulness is something that cannot be taught through slides; it is a quality of presence that can only be felt.
As the families arrived, the room gently opened up into a shared sanctuary. We invited parents and children to step away from the hurried pace of daily life, turning inwards to simply meet one another in quiet presence.
The most touching moments were not found by looking at the screen, but when parents and children looked deeply into each other's eyes. Seeing a mother completely present for her child, wrapping her arms around her daughter in a slow, tender embrace, was incredibly moving. In those quiet intervals, the labels of "teaching" and "learning" softly dissolved into pure, heartfelt presence.
When we practice pausing with our children, a few gentle shifts begin to happen in our hearts:
From "Listening For" to "Listening To": Moving away from listening with an agenda—like checking off a mental to-do list—and shifting toward simply receiving our children’s voices, expressions, and presence exactly as they are.
From Doing Together to Being Together: Resting from the constant need to "accomplish" or complete an activity, and allowing ourselves to just dwell safely in each other’s company, anchored in the now.
From Correcting to Connecting: Softening our natural instinct to manage or guide behavior first, choosing instead to offer a gentle bridge of emotional warmth and safety.
As our time came to an end, the empty chairs we started with felt completely different. They had held quiet pauses, soft laughter, and tender embraces. It was a moving reminder that we don't need grand gestures to build deep relationships—only the willingness to pause, breathe, and open our hearts.
If you would love to experience a gentle space of connection like this with your child, we warmly invite you to join our upcoming Parent & Child Workshops in June and July. You can follow our journey and find more details at www.tulipmeadows.sg.
