The Courage to Leave It Be
I was looking at this canal last evening and noticed the clusters of green growing stubbornly against the concrete. My first instinct? Someone should clear those weeds.
But then I realized: it's too deep. It's too dangerous to go down there.
In life, we often encounter "weeds"—grief, difficult memories, or circumstances we didn't choose. We feel an urgent need to "fix" them, to scrub the concrete clean so everything looks "orderly" again.
But mindfulness teaches us the power of Acceptance.
Acceptance isn't about liking what is there; it’s about acknowledging that, right now, it is there. Sometimes, the most compassionate thing we can do for ourselves is to stop trying to descend into the dangerous depths to fix what cannot be changed.
3 Small Shifts in Acceptance:
Observe without the "Fix": Can I look at this difficult emotion or situation and simply name it? "There is sadness," rather than "I must stop being sad."
Respect the Boundary: Acknowledge that some things are beyond our current reach. It is okay to leave the "weeds" alone and focus on standing safely on the path.
Find Beauty in the Unplanned: Even in a concrete canal, the green finds a way to live. Can I find a sliver of grace in my life, even amidst the parts that feel messy or unresolved?
We don't always need to clear the path to find peace. Sometimes, peace is found in finally letting the weeds be and choosing to walk forward anyway. 🌿
