The Tree That Teaches
There's a tree in my neighborhood I pass almost every day. Massive. Strong. Branches reaching out like open arms.
That thick, weathered trunk. Those wide branches providing shade. The ferns and plants growing right on its bark - literally supporting other life on its own body.
This tree has stood through countless storms. Heavy winds. Harsh sun. Torrential rain. It bends but doesn't break. Season after season, it remains - solid, dependable, giving.
And I thought: this tree is like every educator I know.
Educators are our constant teachers. Like this tree, they show up every day. Through their own storms - budget cuts, administrative pressures, personal challenges - they stand firm. Doors open, arms ready, presence steady.
They provide shelter without asking for anything in return. Just as this tree offers shade to anyone who needs it, educators create safe spaces. For the struggling student. The anxious child. The one who just needs someone to believe in them.
They weather storms so others can grow. Strong winds of curriculum change. Storms of difficult dynamics. The weight of juggling classroom demands, administrative tasks, home responsibilities - all in a fast-paced, unpredictable world. Stress. Distraction. Burnout. These are real storms educators face every single day. Yet like this tree, they bend without breaking. They endure. Because that's what's needed for those in their care to flourish.
Look at those plants growing on the tree's branches. It's not just standing strong for itself - it's become the foundation for other life to thrive. That's what educators do. They become the ground from which confidence grows, curiosity blooms, potential takes root.
To every educator and student-facing professional reading this: You are this tree. Strong when you don't feel strong. Sheltering even when you need shelter yourself. Teaching through your presence as much as your words.
Thank you for standing firm. For weathering the storms. For spreading your branches wide.
I see you. Because I've been you. I've weathered these same storms.
My Small Shifts:
Strength isn't about never bending - it's about standing firm through storms and growing back what's lost
The best teachers give shelter freely and become the foundation for others to grow
Sometimes the greatest teaching happens through quiet, steady presence - just showing up, day after day
I've been there. I know these storms. And I've learned to weather them. Now I want to help you do the same. I'm offering a complimentary 1-hour online session: "Supporting Educator Wellbeing in Demanding Times". Practical strategies to manage stress, regain focus, and support your wellbeing. Multiple session times available.
